An Apocalyptic Forecast for Europe, Sergey Karaganov, October 5, 2026 |
A world war is underway. The West has unleashed a semi-soft world war. First, the Americans provoked that war, then handed it off to the Europeans. Then the Americans and Israelis launched an operation against Iran — and not only Iran, incidentally; their goal was to destabilize the entire Greater Middle East and South Asia. Russia will use nuclear weapons if Europeans do not acknowledge their failure and “crawl back,” believes Sergei Karaganov, Academic Supervisor of the Faculty of World Economy and World Politics at National Research University Higher School of Economics. An apocalyptic scenario for the Old World from the country’s most authoritative expert — in an interview with Rosbalt. |
Sergei Alexandrovich, we can see how the position of the West in the new world is changing. Failure in Ukraine, failure in Iran are the clearest confirmations that the West is losing weight. Even the people of African countries today are far from the slaves the West has been accustomed to seeing them as. What is happening? A world war is underway. The West has unleashed a semi-soft world war. First, the Americans provoked that war, then handed it off to the Europeans. Then the Americans and Israelis launched an operation against Iran — and not only Iran, incidentally; their goal was to destabilize the entire Greater Middle East and South Asia. This process is a very long one. Everyone in the West understands this. The Americans are acting cold-bloodedly and calculatingly, and while we do not approve of it, we are embarrassed to say outright that the Americans have simply gone off the rails and are acting like bandits under the leadership of their president. And the Europeans, simply because of all their failures happening everywhere, are driving towards a war. Given that two generations of Europeans are now semi-educated, and democracy selects the worst, the quality of the elite has sharply deteriorated. It is a dangerous situation. Things are getting worse. But the keys are in Russia’s hands. |
What do you mean? We warned the Americans firmly enough. Even under Biden, though they were supplying weapons and money to Ukraine, they had already started to crawl back. The Europeans have not. I hope we will not have to punish the Europeans to the point of bringing them fully to their senses. On the other hand, I see that our president and our foreign minister have begun saying very serious things that we ourselves have not yet fully grasped. They said that if a war with Europe begins, it will be very short. This means that a signal has been given at the highest level: we will strike with nuclear weapons. I hope that after this, the Europeans will begin to sober up. |
So far, they keep frightening us: Finland is ready to host nuclear weapons, then Latvia. How should we respond to these statements? These are just words. But if nuclear weapons were to be deployed in Finland or anywhere else, I think it is Russia’s obligation to destroy those weapons along with the countries that attempt to deploy them. We need to stop the Europeans and the Baltic states. |
If they go ahead with it, will that completely untie our hands? Yes. But it is a momentous decision, which is very difficult to make. And the fact that both the President and the Minister of Foreign Affairs have begun talking about how, if war starts, it will be very short, strikes me as a very good step forward. Next, we need to move our nuclear forces closer to Europe’s borders, amend our nuclear doctrine even further so that it explicitly states that any war with a group of countries that surpasses us in demographic, economic, and military potential requires Russia to immediately use nuclear weapons. We also need to act more decisively in Ukraine — which we began doing two months ago, though somewhat belatedly. |
Can we conclude that the collective West has weakened significantly right now, even though this process surely began before the SMO? The West has weakened considerably — especially Europe, economically, morally, politically — they are losing on all fronts. The problem is that Europe, for example, is seeking a way out of its wretched situation through militarization. To revive their economy, they want to revive their military-industrial complex. This cornered dog wants to sharpen its teeth, and we should be ready to start shooting such dogs. |
Europeans believe that militarization is also one of the only ways to reclaim their influence. Is that so? Or is it yet another, perhaps even fatal, mistake? Militarization is certainly no way out for Europe. We simply need to understand, ourselves, that our European century — which Peter the Great started — should have ended a century and a half ago. Now our policy toward Europe should be rough deterrence and maximum separation. A cordon sanitaire must be placed around Europe: surround it with weapons, and if it truly acts up, resolutely move to destroy several of those countries. |
Russia is one thing — but do the less-prepared countries of the Global South, the global majority, have the strength, resources, and courage to push back and defend a new world order free from Western hegemony, and prevent a repeat of something like colonization? The world is indeed moving toward greater freedom. The one thing we have not fully acknowledged is that it was we who gave Third World countries their freedom. We knocked out the foundations of Western dominance in economics, politics, and military supremacy from under the West’s feet. That is why the West is crumbling. Yet, we must, indeed, ensure that as it crumbles, the West does not drag the rest of the world down with it. |
Do you think they will try to reclaim their supremacy? The Americans — yes, they are trying to do something, but they are scorching the earth everywhere they have been. As I said, they set fire to the war in Europe, they ignited a bigger war in the Middle East, they keep feeding these wars. So we need to deter and deal with them as calmly and restrainedly as possible, since some elements of cooperation remain possible. But the Europeans need to be contained firmly, and we must be ready to punish them, if needed. We must remember, after all, that Europe is the source of all of humanity’s miseries: wars, genocides, racism, colonialism, and everything worst. However, we are also faced with a huge and very difficult challenge — understanding that calling ourselves Europeans is today morally shameful and intellectually foolish. |
Even so, experts cannot agree on what the world will look like: bipolar, tripolar? Genuine multipolarity, frankly, raises doubts: if two or three countries cannot find common ground, achieving unity among dozens of countries is even harder. The world will be very diverse. If America wants a big war, we will win that war, and the world will be varied, multicultural, and multicolored. I find this emerging world very much to my liking. This is happening in part because we have liberated the world from Western domination. |
And where will Russia stand in this diverse, multicolored world in 10–20 years? We will live magnificently, because we have finally turned our attention to ourselves and finally concluded our European detour. We must conclude it definitively and understand that we are not Europeans — that being a European is something to be ashamed of. We must develop ourselves and understand that the spirituality close to us lies largely to the south — Palestine, Byzantium, the Muslim world, the Buddhist world. We must understand that our political system came from the East and that the future lies in the East. If we understand this, we will live very well, because the whole world needs our resources and our strength. We need to defeat Ukraine and, by extension, Europe as quickly as possible. But we need to develop ourselves first and foremost. |
I have heard many experts say that in politics you can trust no one at all. And even in our relationship of trust with China, far from everyone believes in it — they expect a trick from Beijing. With Europeans and Americans there is nothing to discuss. And yet — is there anyone we can trust in today’s world? Our relationship with the Chinese is quite trusting; we have common interests. All our disputed issues have been resolved. We simply need to understand that Russia is a great Eurasian civilization — that is where our future lies. But the only thing we can trust is our armed forces. |
