もちろん、ジェノサイドと産業化された大量虐殺が一時停止されたこと（いったい誰のために？）、そして双方の側で人質が解放されたこと、特に数百人のパレスチナ人人質が帰還を許されたことには、喜ばざるを得ない。その多くは子供であり、中には数十年にわたりイスラエルの地下牢で腐り果て、日々拷問と虐待を受けてきた者もいたのだ。

Of course, one cannot but rejoice at the fact that the genocide and the industrialised mass slaughter have been paused (for who long?), and that hostages have been released on both sides, including hundreds of Palestinian hostages who have been allowed to return home, many of them children, some of them having been rotting away in Israeli dungeons for decades, tortured and brutalised daily.

But this — of course — doesn’t cancel the horror of the slaughter, the genocide that we’ve witnessed in Gaza over the past two and a half years, the more than a hundred thousand Palestinians murdered — likely many more — including tens of thousands of children, many under the age of 1. If Israel and the Western governments that backed the genocide think that people will just forget that and go back to their normal lives and pretend nothing happened and go back to treating Israel as a normal country then they’re in for a surprise. This genocide has opened up people’s eyes about the nature of the Zionist regime and the unspeakable horrors that Palestinians are subjected to on a daily basis and have been subjected to for almost a century.  It’s sickening that the same people who have committed this genocide are now posing as great humanitarians and peacemakers, when all they’ve done is decide to unilaterally pause the genocide.  Moreover, it remains to be seen whether even this ceasefire will hold. Israel has a long history of violating ceasefires. There’s been a ceasefire in place between Israel and Lebanon since almost a year and since then Israel has violated it hundreds of times and killed hundreds of people. Indeed, Israel has already violated the ceasefire in Gaza, with several Palestinians killed by the IDF since the deal came into force — as well as by proxy armed groups funded by Israel who are now “clashing with Hamas”.

したがって、過去2年半にわたって目撃してきたような産業規模の虐殺は、せいぜい一時的には収束するだけだろう。しかし、ガザ地区でもヨルダン川西岸地区でも、殺戮は続くだろう。実際、イスラエルの有力政治家たちもそのように述べている。 そして、ガザの人々が「故郷」に帰るのは一体何なのかという疑問もある。ガザ地区には何も残っていない。地区全体が完全に破壊されてしまったのだ。家も病院も学校も、ほとんど何も残っていない。なのに、この怪物どもはこれを平和と呼ぶ。生命維持に必要なあらゆる環境と制度が完全に破壊されたことは、ジェノサイドの象徴であるだけでなく、未治療の傷、医療の欠如、飢えと渇きによって人々が死に続けることを意味する。つまり、実際にはジェノサイドの進行を遅らせているだけに等しいのだ。 では、パレスチナ人の将来はどうなるのだろうか？全くない。ガザ地区の人々は今のところ、新植民地主義の保護下に置かれ、ヨルダン川西岸地区と同様に、ゆっくりと民族浄化され続けるだろう。パレスチナ国家の話など、ひどい冗談である。パレスチナ国家を樹立できる土地などない。イスラエルはパレスチナ人の土地をすべて支配しており、返還するつもりはない。 だから、パレスチナ人はこれからも苦しみ続けるだろうーーこれまで以上に。彼らは自由と主権、そして普通の尊厳ある生活を送るという単純な権利を否定され続け、アパルトヘイト、拷問、殺人、そしてあらゆる種類の残虐行為にさらされ続けるだろう。

So at best we’ll see a temporary pause in the kind of industrial-scale slaughter that we’ve witnessed over the past two and a half years, but the killing will continue — in Gaza as in the West Bank. Indeed, senior Israeli politicians have said as much.  Then there’s the question of what Gazans are “returning home” to: there’s nothing left in Gaza, the whole Strip has been entirely flattened. There are virtually no homes, no hospitals, no schools left — and these monsters dare to call this peace. This complete destruction of all life-sustaining conditions and institutions is not just a hallmark of genocide — it also means that people will continue dying from untreated wounds, lack of medical attention, hunger and thirst. So in fact it’s more like slowing down the genocide.  So what are the prospects for Palestinians? There are none. Gazans for now will be placed under a neocolonial guardianship where they will continue slowly being ethnically cleansed, as in the West Bank. Any talk of a Palestinians state is a sick joke. There is no land on which to create a Palestinian state; Israel controls all Palestinian land and has no intention of giving it back.  So the Palestinians will continue to suffer — indeed more than ever before. They will continue having their freedom and sovereignty and simple right to a normal, dignified life denied — and they will continue being subjected to apartheid, torture, murder and brutalisations of all sorts.

これらすべての理由から、これはいかなる意味においても「和平合意」とはみなせない。最後の理由は、和平合意を締結するには二つの交戦当事者が必要だということだ。しかし、ここには二つの交戦当事者は存在しない。このような論法は、これが「イスラエルとハマスの戦争」だったという印象を強めるだけだ。しかし、そうではない。これは、地球上で最も強力な国々が、無防備な住民、つまり定義上いかなる交渉にも参加できない住民に対して仕掛けた大量虐殺キャンペーンだった。 イスラエルと米国だけがこの大量虐殺を阻止する手段を持っていた。そして、もし両国が最終的に（おそらく一時的な）停戦を実施することを決定したとすれば、それはイスラエル、そしてさらに言えば米国にとっての戦略的考慮によるものである。ハマスが「ついに」残りの人質解放を受け入れたからこそこの合意が成立したという考えは、道徳的に擁護できないばかりか――まるで少数の人質解放を拒否したからといってジェノサイドが正当化されるかのように――全くの嘘である。交渉に関わったイスラエル人によって確認されているように、ハマスは1年以上前に現在のガザ停戦合意の条件に同意したが、イスラエルは戦争継続を望んだため拒否したのだ。だから、これが本当に二者間の「交渉」だったなどというふりをするのはやめよう。

For all these reasons, this cannot be considered a “peace deal” in any meaningful sense of the word. A final reason: you need two warring parties to make a peace deal. But there aren’t two warring parties here. Such a narrative simply reinforces the notion that this was a “war between Israel and Hamas”. It wasn’t. It was a genocidal campaign waged by some the most powerful nations on Earth against a defenceless population — one which by definition couldn’t take part in any negotiations.  Only Israel and the US had the means to stop the genocide, and if they decided to finally implement a (most likely temporary) ceasefire it is purely due to strategic considerations on Israel’s and — even more so, the US’s — behalf. The notion that this deal was able to materialise because Hamas “finally” accepted to release the remaining hostages is not only morally indefensible — as if the refusal to release a handful of hostages could justify a genocide — but is in fact a straight-out lie. Hamas agreed to the terms of the current Gaza ceasefire deal more than a year ago, as confirmed by an Israeli involved in the negotiations, but Israel refused because it wanted to continue the war. So let’s stop pretending this was really a “negotiation” between two parties.
