(ジジェク、LESS THAN NOTHING)
(ジジェク『THE REAL OF SEXUAL DIFFERENCE』私訳)
(Subjectivity and Otherness: A Philosophical Reading of Lacan, by Lorenzo Chiesa)
The expression Lacan uses here, ex-sister au die, is not easily rendered in English; Lacan is borrowing a term, ex-sistence, which was first introduced into French in translations of Heidegger's work (e.g., Being and Time), as a translation for the Greek έκσταση and the German Ekstase. The root meaning of the term in Greek is "standing outside of" or "standing apart from" something. In Greek, it was generally used for the removal or displacement of something, but it also came to be applied to states of mind that we would now call "ecstatic." (Thus, a derivative meaning of the word is "ecstasy.") Heidegger often played on the root meaning of the word, "standing outside" or "stepping outside oneself," but also on its close connection in Greek with the root of the word for "existence." Lacan uses it to talk about an existence that stands apart, which insists as it were from the outside, something not included on the inside. Rather than being intimate, it is "extimate."(On Feminine Sexuality The Limits of Love and Knowledge BOOK XX Encore 1972-1973 TRANSLATED WITH NOTES BY Bruce Fink)
Fremdkörper, a foreign body present in the inside but foreign to this inside. The Real ex-sists within the articulated Symbolic.(Paul Verhaeghe "Mind your Body ")
A man stupidly believes that, beyond his symbolic title, there is deep in himself some substantial content, some hidden treasure which makes him worthy of love, whereas a woman knows that there is nothing beneath the mask. (ZIZEK,LESS THAN NOTHING,2012)
"Yes, of course, if it's fine tomorrow," said Mrs Ramsay. "But you'll have to be up with the lark," she added. To her son these words conveyed an extraordinary joy, as if it were settled, the expedition were bound to take place, and the wonder to which he had looked forward, for years and years it seemed, was, after a night's darkness and a day's sail, within touch.
Since he belonged, even at the age of six, to that great clan which cannot keep this feeling separate from that, but must let future prospects, with their joys and sorrows, cloud what is actually at hand, since to such people even in earliest childhood any turn in the wheel of sensation has the power to crystallise and transfix the moment upon which its gloom or radiance rests, James Ramsay, sitting on the floor cutting out pictures from the illustrated cata-logue of the Army and Navy stores, endowed the picture of a refrigerator, as his mother spoke, with heavenly bliss. It was fringed with joy.
The wheelbarrow, the lawnmower, the sound of poplar trees, leaves whitening before rain, rooks cawing, brooms knocking, dresses rustling—all these were so coloured and distinguished in his mind that he had already his private code, his secret language, though he appeared the image of stark and uncompromising severity, with his high forehead and his fierce blue eyes, impeccably candid and pure, frowning slightly at the sight of human frailty, so that his mother, watching him guide his scissors neatly round the refrigerator, imagined him all red and ermine on the Bench or directing a stern and momentous enterprise in some crisis of public affairs.
"But," said his father, stopping in front of the drawing-room window, "it won't be fine." Had there been an axe handy, a poker, or any weapon that would have gashed a hole in his father's breast and killed him, there and then, James would have seized it. Such were the extremes of emotion that Mr Ramsay excited in his children's breasts by his mere presence;
…so that the monotonous fall of the waves on the beach, which for the most part beat a measured and soothing tattoo to her thoughts and seemed consolingly to repeat over and over again as she sat with the children the words of some old cradle song, murmured by nature, "I am guarding you—I am your support," but at other times suddenly and unexpectedly, especially when her mind raised itself slightly from the task actually in hand, had no such kindly meaning, but like a ghostly roll of drums remorselessly beat the measure of life, made one think of the destruction of the island and its engulfment in the sea, and warned her whose day had slipped past in one quick doing after another that it was all ephermal as a rainbow—this sound which had been obscured and concealed under the other sounds suddenly thundered hollow in her ears and made her look up with an impulse of terror.
— children never forget. For this reason, it was so important what one said, and what one did, and it was a relief when they went to bed. For now she need not think about anybody. She could be herself, by herself. And that was what now she often felt the need of—to think; well, not even to think. To be silent; to be alone. All the being and the doing, expansive, glittering, vocal, evaporated; and one shrunk, with a sense of solemnity, to being oneself, a wedge-shaped core of darkness, something invisible to others.(Virginia Woolf,To the Lighthouse (1927))
超自我の機能は、まさにわれわれ人間存在を構成する恐怖の動因、人間存在の非人間的な核を途方に暮れさせることにある。この次元とは、ドイツの観念論者が否定性と呼んだものであり、そしてまたフロイトが死の欲動と呼んだものである。現実界のトラウマ的な固い核、――そこから昇華がわれわれを保護してくれるーーその核であるどころか、超自我そのものが現実界を仕切っている仮面なのである。(ZIZEK"LESS THAN NOTHING"私訳)
